During the study phase, students undergo a full-time Master's program at one of the three theaching universities within the Max Plank School of Photonics network, thus either the the M.Sc. Advanced Optical Technologies - MAOT program at the university of Erlangen-Nuremberg, the M.Sc. Photonics - ASP program in Jena, or the M.Sc. Optics and Photonics - KSOP program in Karlsruhe (for more details on each university, see below). Besides the university courses, MPSP students also participate in courses aimed at the develpment and advancement of scientific and social skills via e-learning or workshops, such as practical laboratory skills training or scientific writing seminars.
Furthermore, the MPSP organizes spring and autumn schools for students in the program in order to prepare them for their PhD research (some of which are mandatory), and also in order to enable the students to connect with MPSP Fellows who match their research interests and could act as PhD supervisors. All MPSP students are encouraged to conduct their curricular internships and Master's theses at the various locations within the MPSP network.

The international Master's Photonics degree program in Jena - known as the cradle of optics and photonics - is based on theoretical fundamentals of optics, electrodynamics and atom and molecular physics. The Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics (KSOP), graduate school at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, provides both multidisciplinary Master's Program in Optics & Photonics taught in English.
